CancerX Announces Strategic Vision and Inaugural Steering Committee

On September 12th, CancerX — a public-private partnership aimed at boosting innovation in the fight against cancer — introduced its inaugural steering committee and strategic priorities for the coming year. The announcement comes several months after the Biden Administration unveiled efforts to reduce the national death rate from cancer by at least 50 percent over the next 25 years as a part of their Cancer Moonshot program. Of the 17 Moonshot initiatives, CancerX is the only one using digital innovation to advance the fight against cancer.

CancerX and its 125+ members — including Slope — are committed to aligning CancerX priorities and activities with the broader Cancer Moonshot community. The assembly of the organization’s first steering committee — coupled with the creation of strategic priorities for 2023-2024 — aim to deliver outsized impact through knowledge exchange, collaboration, and action.

CancerX’s steering committee provides an additional layer of governance within CancerX’s public-private partnership model. It is comprised of a diverse group of stakeholders from various sectors within the industry, thus ensuring equitable representation. 12 representatives from the world’s leading innovators in cancer research — from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to Janssen — make up the membership of the committee.

According to the announcement made by CancerX, strategic priorities include:

  • Demonstrating CancerX as the global leader in advancing digital innovation in oncology in alignment with the goals of the reignited Cancer Moonshot.
  • Activating the ecosystem by fostering a dynamic innovator community for collaborative knowledge sharing, leveraging national platforms and US government partnerships to enhance outcomes through combined public and private sector strengths.
  • Identifying, supporting, growing, and implementing world-class digital solutions in the market dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer for all people.

CancerX is co-hosted by Moffitt Cancer Center and the Digital Medicine Society (DiMe) alongside the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH). Powered by the new steering committee and 125+ member organizations comprised of leaders at the intersection of digital innovation and oncology, the initiative is actively executing pre-competitive research, an Accelerator program, and demonstration projects on an ambitious timeframe — because cancer waits for no one.

In the months ahead, CancerX will share new findings and resources from its “Advancing Digital Innovation to Improve Equity and Reduce Financial Toxicity in Cancer Care and Research” project work and open applications for its Accelerator program, which aims to provide mentorship, education, and exposure to funding and clinical partnership opportunities to a start-up cohort aligned with the mission.
