Vice President, Product
Remote, Continental US Time Zones Only
Job Summary

This position is for a Product Designer, which is currently a remote position. While this position will work remotely, the ability to work standard business hours in one of the continental US time zones is required. In this role, you will help lead the detailed interaction design and visual design of emerging and existing solutions in the Slope software platform during product discovery and development. The day-to-day for a Product Designer runs the gamut from defining potential interaction designs for planned features, crafting refined visuals for the details of an agreed solution, developing and maintaining a design style guide, and collaborating with colleagues across the business to share and refine envisioned solutions. This role will also be involved in customer research activities such as usability testing. This is a fast-paced, dynamic position that is a perfect fit for a motivated and intelligent individual who is eager to get deep into the guts of the software product design and development in a start-up environment, and help improve the outcomes of customers using the Slope platform.

The role sits inside the Research and Development team. We are a lower-case-a agile organization practicing according to its original principles. We don’t have much overhead due to our small team size, bent towards autonomy, and preference for async communications as a distributed company. Our software platform exhibits a strong information architecture but is relatively rudimentary from a UI perspective, which allows the person operating in this role to have a fresh canvas on which to explore and evolve the interaction and visual designs.

  • Assesses product feature requirements to design coherent interactions and deliver an overall user experience that meets the user’s needs while serving the business’s goals.
  • Help conduct usability research activities to ensure finished designs are as robust and simple as possible for our customers. Research activities might include but aren’t limited to 1:1 customer interviews, site visits/contextual inquiry; usability testing; and surveys.
  • Design meaningful and beautiful feature behaviors for the Slope product platform. Beautiful features at a high level reflect an appropriate understanding of target users, awareness of existing product contexts, and understanding the feasibility of design proposals. Beautiful features at a detailed level will include accessibility considerations, the crafting of appropriate microcopy, and visualization of quantitative information.
  • Support day to day software development activities by collaborating with team members individually and in meetings to ensure Slope’s features are, in fact, beautiful for the people who consume them.
  • Support internal teams by maintaining design standards and helping keep product design materials and future specifications up-to-date.
  • Stay in touch with the pulse of projects to help product discovery, design, and development activities all rolling smoothly on a daily basis. (Slope primarily uses Slack, Jira, and Basecamp for internal communications.)
  • Other duties as assigned
Experience & Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience.
  • Proven experience defining usable interaction designs, documenting design solutions, working closely with software development teams to ensure feature correctness, and helping ship solutions to market.
  • Proven experience exercising persuasive skills that help align stakeholders behind your envisioned designs.
  • Proven ability to manage your time in order to successfully operate on more than one feature effort at any given time.
  • Ability to grok technical subject matter and operate effectively in a complex industry environment.
Who we're looking for
  • An innovative, enthusiastic, and dedicated individual who is eager to drive value in a growing company. Given a problem area, you are always happy to take a rough concept and turn it into a refined, valuable solution.
  • Someone experienced with the principles and best practices of interaction design and visual design for digital products.
  • Someone experienced with collaborating with product managers and technical leads to craft prototypes and iterate toward solutions that ship to the market.
  • Someone experienced with creating static mockups as well as interactive prototypes, preferably with Figma.
  • Someone who is comfortable supporting front-end developers, or even actively delivering CSS, HTML, and JavaScript code.
  • A strong communicator who is very detail-oriented and comfortable working with a remote team.
  • Someone who is comfortable designing with real content and data.
  • Someone who leads with their head but keeps Slope’s target customers’ unique qualities alive in their heart.
